Years ago, Mexican soap operas were fairly popular where I live, because they were on at night unlike English language soaps that were on only during the day, when most women in the USA must be at work. How popular are soap operas in Mexico?

Mexican soaps are broadcast throughout South America during the day now. They are terrible...

Terrible?Do you mean the acting is bad, or is it the script that is to blame?

Both I suppose... though that is also the definition of a soap. What was really irritating when I lived in Costa Rica, you would often enter a store and the employees would be too engrossed in a soap to both to give you any service!

We get a few of the Mexican soaps on cable. They always seem very dramatic. There was actually a reality show I say a couple of episodes of this year. My problem was I really had a hard time following the drama of the reality show.I do recall that doing one of those telenovelas (isn't that what they are called?) worked wonders for Erik Estrada a few years back.

They are great for learning the language though. The actors are so expressive you know what they are talking about even with the TV muted. The repetition is pretty helpful too.

I think Mexican soaps would be funny to watch!

After the first hour of watching you'll be ready to check yourself into a mental hospital for couple of weeks!

I have seen some of these soaps on my satelitte tv during the day and you can not understand what is going on at all, and also the picture quality is terriable.

I disagree with you guys, Mexican novels is he best. But if you are not satisfied with the Mexican novels, why not try watching novels of Koreans. Their novels are great.

According to the posts I have read, no one is really talking about novels. I would be curious to sample Mexican novels, now that someone has brought up the topic.I am not a soap fan but how else can you define an opera without singling out a poor script? Most of the time, you can tell what will happen next besides laughing at how love is made to be so much of a thing to look up to. I would rather watch football.
Are there any men that watch soap operas?
