Most countries have stringent requirements you must fulfill before you are allowed to move in permanently. Things like how you make you living, whether or not you have a criminal record, and if you have family and friends in the country already can determine whether or not you can leave for new horizons.

What requirements must one fulfill before being allowed to live in Mexico?

Comment #1 eyes4 from The Beach (Contact Member) -

DianaR, a great source of information for these questions can be found on the State Department web site.

Specifically: http://www.state.gov/ p/wha/ci/mx/

But this forum will not allow me to add the whole address, so remove the space between .gov/ and p/wha... to get to the documents specific to Mexico

Mexico is strict - more strict than the U.S.

....

Comment #2 George from El Paso, Texas (Contact Member) -

Just put the link (including the http://) in the "web link" box and the title (or not) in the link title box and then the link will appear with no trouble.

Comment #3 eyes4 from The Beach (Contact Member) -

George, thanks. Right there in front of me... I'm a blind goof ball sometimes.

Comment #4 DianaR from USA (Contact Member) -

So,

What have your real life experiences been with moving to Mexico?

Are there problems that people should be aware of that might not be addressed by a website?

Comment #5 EugenS from Europe (Contact Member) -

Why is Mexico more strict than the US? I don't get it.

Comment #6 George from El Paso, Texas (Contact Member) -

You might find that they are more strict not because they want to keep US citizens out... but rather they are looking to keep some from countries just to the South out.

Comment #7 EugenS from Europe (Contact Member) -

Like what, South American countries? Aren't they going directly into to the US?

Comment #8 George from El Paso, Texas (Contact Member) -

I said countries to the south... Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador. If they can't get to the USA, Mexico may well be their second choice.

Comment #9 DianaR from USA (Contact Member) -

I wonder why the USA hasn't tried to get Mexico to loosen its requirements for US citizens only?

After all, a lot of Mexican citizens enter the USA and exercise rights not afforded US citizens who move to Mexico.

Comment #10 EugenS from Europe (Contact Member) -

I don't think it's fair to have fewer restrictions just for US citizens. Why would they...

Comment #11 DianaR from USA (Contact Member) -

Reciprocity is one of the building blocks of relationships between nations. If Mexico isn't ready to loosen their requirements for U.S. citizens, then we should tighten ours in response.

Comment #12 Simplyme from Simply-Where-I-Am (Contact Member) -

Not a bad idea. I think for sure there should be equal opportunities. I would like to have some of the same opportunities if I were to move there for sure.

Comment #13 DianaR from USA (Contact Member) -

I imagine things will change as more US citizens retire to Mexico. I can't imagine Mexico risking this stream of income, knowing that the baby boomers are entering retirement.

Comment #14 Dana from the New World (63.176.159.30) -

You are all correct. If the Mexican government keep this up then maybe (just maybe) the US government should reconsider their tourism agreement or connection with the Mexicans. A travel ban can be announced against the country, and the rights of Mexicans living in the US should also be controlled... if all this happens then it will not be long that the Mexican people will cry for equality, their people asking aid from their government, the government will then contact the American government, and finally the government can impose a fair treatment for their citizens in Mexico, in exchange for the equality of Mexicans in US.

What are the requirements to retire in Mexico.?

I think that it is more strict there in Mexico than the US because there government is pry more strict also. I am pretty sure you are not given as many oppurtunities or as much freedom there as here.

I am moving to Mexico to either the Yucatan or Chetumal areas but need to know what I'm allowed to bring with me in the way of household items, pets, and etc. I've heard no TV's or Bicycles and wonder if that's true. Thank you ahead of time for any help you can give me. Shay

I was born and raised in the U.S.A. but my husband decided to Move to Mexico where he was born. How can I get Mexico papers? So I can work and be able to have a lisence.

I believe whatever kind of relations the two countries have largely depends on their histories. If their economies are almost at par then softening the laws will be of benefit towards their integration.

It seems to me then that the two countries are as diverse in their political systems as they are in respect to lifestyles. Liz, if you want to get Mexican papers in pursuit of your husband, make sure you have a common ground

i will be happy if somebody can forward me the email of the mexico immigration because i have upcoming conference coming in october and there embassy request they register our names with the immigration and the immigration should forward our names to the embassy before we can be granted visa please get back to me thank you and God blessed

A whole part of what determines the whole process of immigrating to a particular country is what, aside from the common things to look at like past criminal record, level of income and purpose of travel, is in addition to the basic requirements.

That is what makes immigration processes unique to each and every other country. James, you could check that in the Mexican Immigration Department. Try googling too.

All the best

Mexican papers in pursuit of your husband. Oh my!! It may not even be worth taking it to that extent. Then again, Mexico may just be the ideal place for you, Liz. Good luck!

Comment #23 Eve (63.176.159.105) - 12/20/09 13:29

Though I would not condone following the guy, I am sure that it may every well be a good idea for Liz to check out Mexico, as her second home.

Comment #24 Oliver (63.176.159.27) - 01/06/10 23:36
