Does anyone know where to find rankings of the cost of living in various major cities in Mexico? I am particularly interested in Guadalajara and Monterrey. How many US Dollars would it take to live comfortably middle class in a safe neighborhood in each city living in a one bedroom apartment? I have been told you cannot live in Mexico on less than $10, 000 pesos ($738 USD or so) a month.

Why is it that when people talk about retiring or migrating to a state on the Southern American region, why is there a question of cost of living? Asian countries are not usually like that. You'll just have to have enough money or business and you are good to go.

Hi Halin, I think you are a little not in the course with the post you made in there. Of course if you are to go to another country you must be aware of the cost of living in that place. At least you will be oriented and will be ready for the finances you will be dealing with. Unless you are rich and have infinite source of money to not think of the expenses.

Elton, I beg to differ with you..at least on what you have stated in your post. I think Halin's wonder is with why people will be so much worried about their cost of living in whatever areas they plan to go to. He is doing this in comparison to the greater Asian continent. The point is if you plan to retire in a country you are not aware of, why not do your research well. After all, you must be worth a fortune when you consider retiring in another country.

That should be easily available online. Have you tried using these popular search engines? In response to Halin, it is not clear what you are trying to suggest but thing is, you need to do enough logistics before moving to a place. You simply do not wake up and for example say, 'Mexico, here I come.'
Even in the event that you are stinking rich, whatever you plan to spend will and should be accounted for.

Try searching in the net for the latest cost of living bulletins. Heave you tried the lonely planet for some info? I think that site is one of the best site to consider ins searching for travel information. Or you can read more from articles on blogs from expats who travels a lot. They usually blogs their travel experiences and you can read them online too.
Best of luck on your search,

Knowing the cost of living in Mexico is going to really change a lot of things for many Americans that are considering their current position in Uncle Sam's archives of complaints. Surely the Mexican economy would do a lot better with more American dollars to balance off the market. Though their oil business is seemingly plummeting, many are leaning towards greener sources of energy anyway.

Actually more American dollars in your country doesn't really equate to more money to spend. More green brought to a country that they could manage could also result to catastrophe if a country don't know how to with it. It could result to more higher inflation in not managed well.

"Price of Guadalajara vs. Monterrey"
Monterrey is the cheapest Mexican city to live in period and actually the cheapest major city outside of capetown in south africa. Mexico City is also fairly cheap if you aren't living in Santa Fe... Santa Fe is very nice but very expensive. You can get a modern apt furnished for around $600-700 USD per month. Guadalajara is a little more expensive. All of these other responses seem idiotic... I mean do you people even live in mexico or atleast have traveled there? It's a valid question. Go check it out for a month and see if you want to live there. Its very nice, but I prefer Baja.

If you really want to migrate the cost of living really wouldn't have much of an impact on your decision but to some it may matter.Middle Class and safe isn't too expensive but there is a lot to be taken into consideration with the changes in country eg. healthcare and transport.

Cost of living in some other countries, this topic always bugs every people who would want to migrate in some other countries. This is normal. And what intrigues me a lot is why people are getting worried over the matter when they know that they can always make some good research over the matter. But anyway, I have to admit that we really need to know the cost of living in the place that we plan to go.
