I thought that Mexico was a seriously Catholic country, With that in mind, I don't see how gay marriage would be tolerated, much less legal.

Mexico is Catholic, so there's no way that will be acceptable there anytime soon

Marriage no, but civil unions were legalized only in Mexico City in November 2006.

Do you mean that gay couples can get civil marriages? Or just some sort of business union or what?

I think the changes accepted by the Republic of Ireland (even the Catholic parts) in the past 15 years cause this issue to be looked at again. Abortion, divorce, and a few other societal changes make it seem possible for Mexico to accept same sex marriages too.

Same sex marriages are now legal in California, so the next big hurdles will be what happens when the couple return to their home state.Unlike the gay marriage law in Massachusetts, Gays don't have to be residents to take advantage of the law.

Don't think there legal, and in my experience Mexico is a little more tolerant of the gay lifestyle than many other Latin American countries (at least in the large cities it is).
