This main sound odd, but I am trying to figure out how you get your American retirement money in Mexico? Aren't there some legal restrictions associated with moving that money out of the country, especially since some of it is Social Security money, which means it is coming from the U.S. government? Many expats have their SS checks direct deposited in a US bank account and use an ATM card to take money out. Others have their SS checks direct deposited in a foreign bank account, not sure if that is possible in Mexico.Others receive a paper check in the USA and have someone deposit it. Others have a paper check sent to their foreign country address, though bank charges are expensive and it is slow to get money when you make a deposit that way. Also in some countries, they won't sent the check to you via the post office and you have to pick it up at the U.S. Embassy. Direct Deposit into a US Bank account is probably the best method to use.

Thank so much for the information! It helps to know some of the details that many website don't actually talk about!

It's probably best to use your card. That way the money is safe in the US, but is spent bit by bit outside the country
