'How Is Public Transportation In Mexico?' Transportation

I will be going to Mexico next year and was wondering how public transportation is. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Wow, no answer since May! Are there any travelers or Mexicans on the board that can answer this excellent question?

We are told in the U.S. not to rent vehicles because there are many problems with the vehicles, the insurance companies, and the corrupt police. Is any of this true? Is there anyone with first hand knowledge that can make suggestions or shed some light on these rumors?

I'm betting that it's pretty good in the main cities, and poorer and poorer in the less developed regions
