Driving from Los Mochis to La Frontera

We are planning a trip down Baja in November. So as to not re-trace, we would like to take ferry to Los Mochis and drive back up through Sinaloa and Sonora. Am wondering about security / safety on the roads there. We have traveled extensively in other parts of Mexico by car, but not in last 15 years. Party of four in SUV, so roads should not be too much of an issue. Thanks for any guidence.
