Google "Orizaba" and you'll get lots of info on the highest peak in Mexico (18, 000? Beautiful sight from Jalapa.)

Any active volcanoes in Mexico or are they all dormant? Mexico is a beautiful country and I hope to visit soon.

El Chichon is the only volcano GoogleEarth shows. I was certain there were a lot more... Maybe Wikipedia or another online encyclopedia will have different results.

Do you need special training to climb around on active volcanoes? I have seen archeology vacations are popular with people who are interested in the subject, but can't afford to get a degree in it.
If so, are there any volcano studies that tourists can work with?

Me and my friends are planning to tour around the world this coming vacation (maybe next year of summer) and would like to try Mexico first. Volcano climbing sounds a great activity for us but then again. Are there any special equipments do we have to purchase (we are planning on how to spend every dime of our money)? Are there any dangers in volcano climbing we should be aware of (so that if there is, then we shall reconsider this plan)? Hope someone can help me with these inquiries.

DanJake, I would think that if you went volcano climbing it would be some kind of tourist attraction type thing. therefor they would provide the gear to do it.

I think it would be so awesome to be able to climb up a volcano. Has anyone on this forum ever do this, if so was it hard and did you have a good time?

Climbing a volcano, not many people can say they have done that in their lives. I personally would never have thought of that idea. Good luck in your information search!

In order to successfully climb a volcano the travel agency or guide (and you) should know if tit is indeed safe to travel the landscape. It is usually those "inactive" or "dormant" volcanoes which are the "safe" ones to climb. You wouldn't want a volcano exploding in front of you right? The key here is still proper research and coordination with the right people for your safety whether you are climbing a volcano or just merely visiting a foreign land.
